Note: 400 mg/day is the general guideline for healthy adults (U.S. FDA). This calculator is for reference only and is not medical advice. Individual caffeine sensitivity varies — consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns.
How caffeine content is calculated
Caffeine levels vary significantly by drink type. A single espresso shot contains roughly 63 mg despite its small volume, while an 8 oz cup of cold brew can reach 155 mg because the long cold-extraction process pulls more caffeine from the same amount of grounds. Cold brew concentrate is even more potent per ounce — around 100 mg per fl oz — which is why it is always diluted before drinking. Matcha contains about 70 mg per teaspoon of powder, and black tea averages 47 mg per cup.
The U.S. FDA considers 400 mg per day a safe upper limit for healthy adults, which is roughly four 8 oz cups of brewed coffee. That said, individual sensitivity differs based on body weight, genetics, medications, and tolerance. Pregnancy, certain health conditions, and some medications lower the recommended ceiling considerably. Use this calculator as a general awareness tool, not as medical guidance.
